Attention Therapists: Powerful wording for your funding letter
What is potentially the most powerful excerpt from the
Mass Health website that could help when writing letters of justification and appeal letters?
According to the publications on the Mass Health website,
equipment is medically necessary if "it is reasonably calculated to prevent,
diagnose, prevent the worsening of, alleviate, correct, or cure
conditions in the member that endanger life, cause pain or suffering, cause
physical deformity or malfunction, threaten to cause or to aggravate a
handicap, or result in illness or infirmity." (found in article 114.6 Division of Healthcare- Finance and Policy)
Consider how the piece of equipment your patient needs will prevent "pain or suffering" or avoid the "threat to cause or aggravate a handicap". If the equipment is denied, will it cause "physical deformity or malfunction" or "result in illness or infirmity" in the patient? Use the wording in this description to guide your construction of an effective letter.
Although this quote comes from the MassHealth website, we are
sure other states have similiar policy. If you know where a similar statement is on your state's website, please let us know.
